My research focuses on mitochondrial redox biology. I participate in projects that study mitochondrial proteins in vitro and in silico, isolated mitochondria, and mitochondrial function in human blood cells. This last aspect has led to applying my basic studies in translational medicine, participating in an interdisciplinary Research and Development group whose purpose is to study and diagnose human mitochondrial diseases. Additionally, I collaborate on various projects that study mitochondrial function and oxidant formation in different models (e.g., sperm cells, platelets) with national and international research groups.
Working area
I am a Full Professor in the Department of Biochemistry with a Full-Time Dedication. I coordinate and teach undergraduate (Medical School; Facultad de Medicina) and postgraduate (PEDECIBA) courses, and I am a member of the School of Medicine Career Commission and the Council of the Manuel Pérez Foundation at the School of Medicine (Universidad de la República).
I was a member of the Ethics Committee for Research at the Facultad de Medicina for 10 years and have participated in several faculty selection committees in the Department of Biochemistry, Facultad de Medicina, and Facultad de Ciencias.
I am a member of the National Research System and a researcher in PEDECIBA Biology. I act as a reviewer for peer-reviewed international journals, serve on postgraduate thesis committees, and evaluate national and international research projects.
I have trained national and international researchers, supervising Master's and PhD theses. I am responsible and co-responsible for competitively funded research projects (FCE, CSIC I+D).
