Research interests
I have led the implementation and development of a research line in Experimental Virology and Antiviral Strategies in Coronaviruses, focusing on molecular biology, viral evolution, and therapeutic applications. Through an experimental approach, we study the mechanisms regulating coronavirus replication fidelity and evolution, using murine coronavirus (MHV-A59) as a model.
Additionally, this research line has fostered international collaborations, culminating in a high-impact publication in Cell Death & Disease (Toro#, Arévalo#, Pereira-Gómez# et al., 2024). This study explores the interaction between coronaviruses and the hematological system, providing new insights into viral pathogenesis and potential therapeutic strategies.
Working area
My area of work focuses on experimental virology and virus evolution, with an emphasis on the One Health framework. In addition to working on the coronavirus research line, I am leading the implementation of a new research line at the Microbiology Unit of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, titled Evaluation of Zoonotic Virus Control Strategies. This line particularly focuses on the development of molecular tools for detection, viral evolution studies, and the evaluation of vaccine effectiveness for zoonotic viruses that impact both animal and human health.
As a Microbiology lecturer at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of the Republic, I teach undergraduate and graduate courses for veterinary students and also participate in graduate courses within the PEDECIBA program. My teaching covers topics such as basic virology, experimental virology, viral evolution, and molecular biology applied to animal and human health.
Through this combination of research and teaching, my goal is to contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge, as well as the development of preventive and therapeutic strategies that improve both animal and human health.
