Seminario de Física 2022: Scale invariance and the search for a theory of quantum gravity

Many physical systems can be tuned such that the system becomes self similar on all length scales.
The pioneering work of Kadanoff and Wilson in the 60s and 70s lead to a theoretical understanding of this scale invariance using the renormalisation group. This lead to the explanation of why, in the vicinity of a second order phase transition, the same scaling exponents are observed in many different systems. In this talk I will explain how the quest for a theory of quantum gravity can also be carried using the same method.
This approach to quantum gravity, known as asymptotic safety, has made significant progress in recent years. I will discuss the current status of the asymptotic safety program and the open problems it faces.
